BIOGRAPHY
Q. Who is Andy Weeks?
A. I am a committed Christian layperson and a full-time evangelist. As an individual,
like many others, I feel not only privileged to be a Christian, but also excited to be one
during these dramatically changing times. But as a church member, I have been, and
remain, very concerned about the serious mission and membership issues facing all our
"mainline" or "legacy" churches today. Collectively, I fear that we are in danger of
becoming the disappearing "mushy-middle"; I strongly believe that jointly we are
called to be the "strong center" of Christianity, as the left and right seem to be
becoming more and more polarized.
And as denominations, I fear that often we are not communicating effectively our own
distinct theological strengths, histories and insights. Personally, I value our different
denominational identities and the range and diversity of worship traditions within each
denomination. I myself have been multiplied, not divided, by learning from the rich
heritages of each tradition. Therefore, I have no desire or sub-agenda to suggest to any
church that they “dumb down” any of their liturgy or theology - to me, that would be
just further homogenization and dilution of our Christian message.
Our common challenge is not to make Christianity more “acceptable”, but to make the
gospel and our churches more accessible! Therefore I am committed to helping
churches in each tradition to take advantage of all the accumulated wisdom businesses
use to present their products and services, and to apply this wisdom to the far more
important goal of presenting themselves and the gospel to an increasingly skeptical and
cynical world.
I also believe that only by empowering lay persons in their spiritual journeys and
equipping them to connect non-believers with God will our churches survive in stable
and declining areas and grow in expanding regions. That empowering and equipping,
for ministry, not tasks and jobs, is the total focus of my full time and only vocation, my
ministry as evangelist, presenting The Magnetic Church conferences.
Therefore, I do not occupy any secular, judicatory or pastoral positions; nor do I hire
myself out as an "evangelism consultant". Consequently, and also because I use all the
latest technology efficiently, I am able to devote all my resources and time to
continually refreshing and updating the presentation and providing it at extremely
reasonable prices.
I was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and lived there through my formative years,
attending first Westmount High School, and then Concordia University. A cradle
Anglican, I was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Memorial Church and attended there
until I left Montreal for three years in Toronto. In Montreal, I worked for Eaton's and
the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, and then commuted to Chicago as a
consultant for Arthur Andersen & Co. In Toronto, I worked for Walter Kidde Corp.,
attending to their operations in Toronto and Paducah, Kentucky. Then I moved to
Rhode Island, I thought to take a job reviving a local industrial manufacturer; I now
believe God wanted me here, because it was here that I began to reconnect with
church. If you wish, you can review more of that part of my life in the opening of my
book Welcome!
( The Table of Contents, Preface and Introduction are directly accessible from the
bottom of the opening page of this site ).
But rejoining the church in Rhode Island was both wonder-filled and frustrating.
Because while I worked as a corporate executive and then as a management consultant
in the eighties, I served concurrently as a church treasurer, workshop leader and on
several church boards. And like too many others, I took on too much, burned out and
drifted away. Later, when I began to search for a new church community, I was
astonished at the obstacles I encountered. I was hurt personally and amazed
professionally by how totally unresponsive many churches were. I was appalled by
their apparent attitude that it was "all up to the visitor to figure things out" - and, "if
visitors were really interested, they would figure it out!".
These negative experiences really sensitized me to the plight of newcomers. So I
resolved to adapt for churches those effective customer oriented processes used in
most of today's successful businesses. I began by writing a "manual" - WELCOME!
TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR NEW MEMBER MINISTRY, my first book,
which was published in 1992 by The Alban Institute. Concurrently, I began to
develop this conference ministry to help empower churches to be more effective and
intentional in their evangelism programs. And with growing appreciation of these
events expressed by sponsors from various mainline churches, I left my corporate
career in 1994 and accepted this conference ministry as my full time and only vocation.
To date, I have had the privilege of having worked with so many gifted, caring and
committed Christians in most of the "mainline" denominations. It has been a joy to
have ventured as far north as Calgary, Alberta, east to Maine and Nova Scotia, south to
Georgia, Mississippi, and the Florida Keys, and all across the heartland of America
from New Jersey and Pennsylvania to Arizona and Texas, California and even Hawaii.
And I am so very grateful to God for all of these wonder-filled opportunities.
(If you would like more information about me and my ministry, especially from those
sponsors who have engaged my services, and from those who have attended as
participants, please refer to the References page on this site).
